About this job
The two courses of a torch-down roof, photographed together. The base sheet is already down and the cap is being fed over it, which is the sequence that gives the assembly its redundancy. What matters at this stage is heat and speed: the torch has to bring the bitumen on the underside of the cap to a flow without cooking the sheet, and the roll has to be moved into that flow before it sets. Get it right and a bead of bitumen squeezes out at the lap, which is the visual confirmation roofers actually look for. Get it wrong and you have a sheet sitting on a roof rather than bonded to one. The laps are staggered against the base course underneath so no two seams stack, because a stacked seam is a straight channel for water. This is a residential Toronto deck, and the reason two plies rather than one is that this climate cycles above and below freezing repeatedly through a single winter, and a single membrane has nothing behind it when a seam finally moves.
