About this job
A finished two-ply modified bitumen roof, photographed on completion. What a good torch-down roof looks like when it is done is unremarkable, and that is the point: an even granulated field, laps running in one direction at a consistent width, and details at the perimeter that sit flat rather than bridging. There are no ripples, which means the sheets were bonded rather than tacked, and no dished areas holding water, which means the fall was checked before the membrane went on rather than discovered afterwards. The granule surface will weather to a slightly lighter shade over the first couple of seasons and then stay where it is. Two things will decide whether this roof reaches the upper end of its service life, and neither is the membrane. The first is whether the drains and scuppers stay clear. The second is whether anyone looks at it between rainstorms. A roof that gets walked twice a year comfortably outlasts an identical roof that nobody visits until something drips.
