The open field of a two-ply torch-down roof, which is the part of the job that looks simple and decides how long the roof lasts. Every sheet overlaps the one before it, and that overlap is the roof: the membrane in the middle of a roll almost never fails, and the seam almost always does. So the width of the lap gets held consistent, the sheet gets rolled into the bitumen rather than pressed with a boot, and the bead that squeezes out at the edge is checked along the whole run rather than at the ends. The granulated cap surface you can see is doing two jobs. It takes the ultraviolet that would otherwise break down the bitumen underneath, and it gives the surface enough texture to walk on when it is wet. On a Toronto roof that will spend part of every winter under snow and part of every summer well above forty degrees at the surface, that protection is the difference between twenty years and considerably fewer.
