About this job
Membrane going out across a deck that has already been stripped, swept and checked. The preparation is most of this job and none of it shows in a finished photograph, so it is worth saying what it involves: the old roof comes off, every proud fastener gets driven or pulled, soft sheathing gets cut out and replaced, and the whole field is swept because a single stone under a torch-applied sheet becomes a puncture the first time somebody walks it. Only then does the first roll get positioned. In these frames the sheets are being run out and aligned dry before anything is bonded, which is how you find out that a run is off square while it is still free to move. Toronto rear roofs are rarely rectangular, so the field almost always ends in a cut against a parapet or a neighbouring wall, and the sheet that has been dry-fitted cuts cleaner than the one being fought into place with a torch already lit.
