About this job

A two-ply modified bitumen roof going down in the order it always goes down: base sheet first, mechanically set and rolled flat, then the cap sheet torched over it. The frames show the base course already covering the field, which is the point at which a torch-down job is either going to be watertight or is not. Laps on the base are what the cap bonds into, so if they wander the whole assembly inherits the problem. You can see the sheets running in one direction across the deck with the laps held to a consistent width, which is what lets the cap course be laid square on top rather than chased around. Two plies is the specification we reach for on a Toronto residential low-slope deck because it gives redundancy: the cap can take the weather and the ultraviolet, and the base underneath is a second membrane rather than a felt. Torch work also means a fire watch and a clear perimeter, so the deck gets swept and the edges checked before the gas is lit. Nothing in these photographs is staged. This is what the roof looked like partway through the day.

What This Job Involved

In the words written against these photographs.

What is happening here

You can see the sheets running in one direction across the deck with the laps held to a consistent width, which is what lets the cap course be laid square on top rather than chased around.

The detail that decides it

Two plies is the specification we reach for on a Toronto residential low-slope deck because it gives redundancy: the cap can take the weather and the ultraviolet, and the base underneath is a second membrane rather than a felt.

Why we do it this way

Torch work also means a fire watch and a clear perimeter, so the deck gets swept and the edges checked before the gas is lit.

Called Flat Roofs Toronto when I noticed water pooling on my flat roof. They came out the next morning, found a few soft spots and repaired everything the same visit. Price was very reasonable and they showed me photos of the work before and after. Good flat roof repair is hard to find in this city so I am keeping their number saved.

Needed our old skylight replaced on the flat roof and Flat Roofs Toronto handled it perfectly. Clean install, no leaks, and it actually looks way better than the old one. The team was friendly, showed up when they said they would, and cleaned everything up after. Great choice for skylight replacement on flat roofs in Toronto. Fair price too would happily recommend them to anyone

Had some issues with my flat roof after that last storm, so I called Flat Roofs Toronto for a repair. They came out quickly, explained what was wrong, and fixed it the same day. Super friendly crew and very reasonable pricing. It's hard to find a good flat roof repair company in Toronto, so I'm glad I found these guys. Would definitely use them again.

Just had my flat roof replaced by Flat Roofs Toronto and couldn't be happier. The crew showed up on time, worked fast, and left the place spotless. Price was fair compared to other flat roof replacement quotes I got around Toronto. No leaks, no drama, just a solid new roof. If you're looking for flat roof replacement in Toronto, these are your guys. Highly recommend!

Called to replace a flat roof skylight that had given us too many problems. They were straightforward about the cost, came out on schedule and completed the replacement in about six hours. The new skylight is clean, well sealed and the installation quality is clearly better than what was there before

Had a flat roof skylight repair done after another roofing contractor's patch job failed. They were upfront about what had gone wrong with the previous repair and what the proper fix would be. Got it done right this time and the skylight has been leak free for eight months now

Flat roof skylight replacement was exactly what we needed. Professional throughout, priced the job fairly and completed the installation cleanly and on schedule. New skylight looks great and the waterproofing around it is properly done. Been through a tough Toronto winter without any issues
