About this job
Curb framing for a skylight on a flat roof. The curb is the reason a skylight leaks or does not, far more than the unit that eventually sits on it. It is a small framed box built up from the deck, and its height is the whole argument: it has to stand proud of the finished roof surface by enough to clear ponded water in a heavy rain and drifted snow in a Toronto February, not merely to clear the membrane. Deck-mounted units fitted flat to a low-slope roof are the single most common skylight failure we are called to. The framing here is set into the deck structure rather than sitting on it, so the load path goes into the joists, and it is square, because a curb that is out of square makes the flashing that follows a fight rather than a sequence. Once this is built and checked, the membrane can be carried up it and the unit set on top of a detail that was designed to keep water out.

What This Job Involved
In the words written against these photographs.
What is happening here
The curb is the reason a skylight leaks or does not, far more than the unit that eventually sits on it.
The detail that decides it
It is a small framed box built up from the deck, and its height is the whole argument: it has to stand proud of the finished roof surface by enough to clear ponded water in a heavy rain and drifted snow in a Toronto February, not merely to clear the membrane.
Why we do it this way
Once this is built and checked, the membrane can be carried up it and the unit set on top of a detail that was designed to keep water out.
