Cutting an opening into a flat roof deck and reinforcing what is left. Adding a skylight to an existing roof is a structural job before it is a roofing job: joists get interrupted, and the load they were carrying has to go somewhere. In these frames the opening is framed back to the joists on all four sides, with headers taking the cut members and transferring their load to the neighbours. That is why the site visit that precedes work like this looks at joist span and joist direction rather than at where the light would be nicest. Sometimes the answer is that the opening can sit between existing members and the job is straightforward. Sometimes the honest answer is that the opening the owner has in mind needs more structural work than the skylight is worth. Garage roofs and rear additions are frequently the best candidates precisely because the framing is simple and the ceiling below is unfinished.
