About this job
Cold-ply membrane worked around the vents, stacks and other penetrations that come up through a flat roof. Every one of these is a hole in an otherwise continuous surface, and every one is detailed as its own small assembly rather than as a place where the field membrane happens to stop. The membrane is brought up the penetration, the corners are cut and fitted rather than folded, and the top is terminated so water running down the pipe cannot get behind it. Sealant appears in this work, but it is doing a secondary job. If sealant is the only thing between the inside of a building and the weather at a penetration, that detail has a service life measured in a few seasons, not a few decades. On an older Toronto roof the penetrations are also the places where previous repairs have accumulated, so part of the work is removing what was done before and rebuilding the detail properly rather than adding another layer to it.
