About this job
A cold-applied two-ply system going down over a prepared flat deck. The plies and the finished result are close to a torch-down roof; the bonding method is not. Instead of melting bitumen with an open flame, each sheet is set into an adhesive that is applied to the deck and combed out ahead of the roll. Nothing on the roof is ever lit. On a detached house with clearance either method works, and the choice comes down to preference and price. On a Toronto row house with a shared party wall and a timber deck that has been drying out for a hundred years, cold-ply is the responsible specification, and it is the reason we install as much of it as we do. The trade-off is time. Adhesive needs working temperature and it needs time to grab, so a cold-ply day is paced by the material rather than by the crew. What you get back is a roof built without a flame anywhere near a neighbour's structure.
