About this job
The cap sheet of a cold-ply roof going down over the base ply. Each roll is positioned dry first so the run can be checked for square against the edge it will finish at, then rolled back, set into adhesive and rolled through to work out the air. Rolling matters more in a cold-applied system than most people expect. With a torch, the flowing bitumen tells you the bond has happened. With adhesive there is no such signal, so the pressure applied through the roller is the only thing making the contact complete, and an unrolled sheet can look perfect and be bonded across half its area. The granulated surface is the finished roof: nothing goes over it. On a Toronto residential deck that means what you see in these photographs is what the roof will look like in ten years, a little lighter and a little more weathered, assuming the drainage keeps working and nobody drags equipment across it.
