What you are looking at
- This is the structural answer to ponding, and it is the right one when the deck itself is dead level or has sagged rather than simply lacking a little fall.
- Framing the fall solves the geometry at the structure, which is where the problem is.
- Water standing on a low-slope roof for more than about forty-eight hours ages the membrane faster, adds real weight, and turns every seam under it into a candidate for failure, so it is worth fixing rather than watching.

About this job
A lumbered slope framed over a flat roof deck to move water toward the drains, with a two-ply system installed over it. This is the structural answer to ponding, and it is the right one when the deck itself is dead level or has sagged rather than simply lacking a little fall. Tapered insulation can create slope on a roof without touching the framing and is often the better tool, but it adds height at the high point and it cannot fix a deck that has dropped between joists. Framing the fall solves the geometry at the structure, which is where the problem is. Water standing on a low-slope roof for more than about forty-eight hours ages the membrane faster, adds real weight, and turns every seam under it into a candidate for failure, so it is worth fixing rather than watching. Once the slope was framed and decked, the roof went on over it in the ordinary sequence, base ply then cap, with the details run at the new perimeter heights.
