About this job
Membrane and cap detailing along a repaired parapet, where the roof surface meets the wall. Two things are happening in these photographs. The membrane is being carried up the vertical face and terminated high enough to sit above any water that could pond against it, and the cap on top of the wall is being set so that it sheds back onto the roof rather than onto the outside face of the masonry. A cap that drains outward looks fine and slowly saturates the wall beneath it, which is why so many Toronto parapets are soft at the top and sound lower down. The termination itself matters as much as the height. Membrane held on by adhesion alone at the top of an upstand is a detail waiting for a windy night. Done properly, this junction stops being the weak point of the roof and becomes an ordinary part of it, which on a low-slope roof surrounded by parapets is most of the battle.
