About this job
Flashing a skylight curb and tying it back into the field membrane. This is the joint that decides whether the unit above it stays dry, and it is a sequence rather than a single action: the field membrane is carried up the curb, terminated near the top, then the metal flashing goes over that termination so that water running down the glass and the frame is delivered onto the membrane rather than behind it. Every layer has to shed onto the layer below it in the direction water actually travels. Corners are cut and fitted individually, because a folded corner leaves a void, and a void at a curb corner is where a skylight leak nearly always begins. What you will not see doing any structural work in these photographs is sealant. It is present, and it has a job, but a detail that depends on it has a short life. The flashing and the membrane are what keep the water out.
