About this job
Repair work to a parapet wall on a flat roof. Parapets are where most Toronto flat roofs actually start leaking, and they are the detail owners are least likely to be watching. The wall takes weather on both faces, the coping on top takes it from above, and the joint between the roof and the wall has to accommodate two materials moving at different rates through repeated freeze and thaw. When that joint gives up, water gets into the top of the masonry, travels down inside the wall and appears somewhere that looks nothing like a roof leak. In these frames the wall is being made good first. That order is not negotiable: carrying new membrane up a face that is spalling behind it just conceals the problem for a season. Once the substrate is sound, the membrane is carried up the upstand and terminated, and the flashing is renewed over that termination so water is delivered onto the roof rather than behind the detail.
