About this job
New framing set out for an attic space build-up over a flat roof. The members are laid out and checked before anything is fixed, which is the least glamorous half hour of the job and the one that decides whether the finished deck runs true. Build-ups like this do more than restore what was there. They are the opportunity to put fall into a roof that never had any, which is how ponding gets solved at the structure rather than managed with tapered insulation later, and they set the depth of the cavity that the insulation has to fit into. In a lot of Toronto houses the existing cavity is only a few inches deep, which makes hitting a sensible R-value with joist depth alone impossible. Framing a build-up changes that constraint, so the conversation about insulation happens now, while the space to hold it is still being decided, rather than after the deck is closed and the answer is fixed.
