Sheathing going onto a newly framed attic build-up. Closing the deck in is the moment a structural job becomes a roofing job again, and it is scheduled rather than allowed to happen: no more deck gets opened in a day than can be made watertight before the crew leaves, because a Toronto forecast is only ever a suggestion. The sheathing is laid with its joints staggered and supported, fasteners are set flush rather than proud, and the surface is swept before anything goes over it. Those last two are not fussiness. A fastener standing a couple of millimetres above the deck will telegraph through a membrane and eventually wear a hole in it from underneath, and a stone left on the deck does the same job faster. With the deck closed and checked, the roofing system can go on over a substrate whose condition is actually known, which is a materially different proposition from covering an old deck and hoping.
